The Veil Nebula is a supernova remnant. The supernova explosion that created it occurred some30 thousand years ago. As time passes the remnant debris keeps traveling further out into space. Since it is known to be approximately 1500 light years away from us, one can observe by the surrounding star field that it has grown to an enormous size - yet it still retains a fine filamentary structure.
